Sup-A-Star
Who: Youth Ages 9-12

What: 22 lessons, 1 educational field trip, 1 teambuilding bowling trip, and 1 fun trip

When: 2 to 3 days a week during the summer

Where: Programs that offer summer feeding programs

Why: To help them build self-esteem and decision making skills in the hope of delaying initiation of sex in adolescence and to also help build parent-child communication skills

How: The “Wait for Sex” curriculum

Best Practice

Who: Any group, organization, school, or church looking to address the issue of teen pregnancy effectively

What: 15 lessons and 1 fun trip for those with 80% attendance or more

When: Once a week over the course of a 15 week period

Where: Current programs are being run at the Anderson County Department of Juvenile Justice, the Anderson Alternative School, Starr-Iva Middle School, West View Heights, and the Oconee Alternative School

Why: To help adolescents understand the problem of teen pregnancy and how their decisions affect their risk

How: A curriculum based on Dr. Douglas Kirby’s ten effective program characteristics. Students in the program are pre-tested and a best practice curriculum is chosen that best meets their needs

Teen Outreach
Who: Youth living in areas with high teen pregnancy rates broken up into groups by middle school and high school

What: A one-year commitment that includes 1 educational trip, 1 team building trip, 1 fun trip, transportation to the required 20-40 hours of community service projects each year, weekly meetings with an attendance rate of 80% or higher, one on one time with staff in preparation for higher education, and various opportunities for leadership and leadership conferences

Where: Current programs exist at Starr-Iva Middle School, Toxaway United Methodist Church (SEAL C), Word Up Teens, Seneca High School, Walhalla Middle School

When: At least once a week for a year

Why: 20 years of evaluation of the Teen Outreach Program shows results of:

11% lower rate of course failure
14% lower rate of school suspension
33% lower rate of pregnancy
60% lower rate of school drop-out

How: Three main components: service learning, classroom activities based on the “Changing Scenes” curriculum, and classroom discussions that connect the two

Toxaway United Methodist Community of Shalom Teen Outreach Program (SEAL C)

The Spot
Who: All teens under 19 years of age in Anderson and Oconee Counties

What: A free, confidential clinic offering clinical and educational services including pregnancy and STD tests, contraceptive counseling, and educational games

When: The first Wednesday of every month from 4:30pm to 7:00pm

Where: Department of Health and Environmental Control at 220 McGee Road in Anderson (where the Anderson Impact! office is located)

Why: Well informed and well prepared teens make better, safer decisions

How: Appointments are needed only for family planning. All other services are provided on a walk-in basis
